by the Nursing Staff of the Hospital. Nurses nominated their favorite doctors, and gave reasons why their nominee should win. Dr. Smith was selected from all those doctors nominated to be the first overall winner of this very prestigious award!
October, 2007:
Dr. Smith
was selected to present one of his videos at the prestigious American College of Surgeons meeting in New Orleans, LA. Dr. Smith presented his technique and experience with a Laparoscopic Ileo-Jejunostomy for Reversal of Malabsorption Following the Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch Procedure at the conference.
May, 2007:
Dr. Smith
was invited to be a keynote speaker at the first International Workshop on the Duodenal Switch in Brazil, held in the city of Curitiba, Brazil. Dr. Smith presented his experience and technique with the Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch at the conference.

with Hand-Sewn Duodeno-Ileostomy" at the headquarters of Ethicon Endosurgery in Cincinnati, OH. The course was for experienced laparoscopic bariatric surgeons who are interested in adding the Duodenal Switch to their armamentarium of bariatric operations. Dr. Gary Anthone was Co-Faculty for the Course. Bariatric surgeons from across the United States attended.

with Hand-Sewn Duodeno-Ileostomy" at the headquarters of Ethicon Endosurgery in Cincinnati, OH. The course was designed for experienced laparoscopic bariatric surgeons who are interested in adding the Duodenal Switch to their armamentarium of bariatric operations. The course also included a course in advanced laparoscopic suturing. Bariatric surgeons from across the United States attended.
December, 2005:
The bariatric surgery program at WellStar that Dr. Smith developed was designated as a
Center of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery
by the Surgical Review Corporation and the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.
October, 2005:

May, 2005:
Dr. Smith served as the faculty expert for a series of information presentations on bariatric surgery prepared by a national multimedia company that specializes in audiovisual educational materials. The materials included all three of the major bariatric operations, the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, the Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch, and the Lap-Band. These were aimed both at patient and public education on bariatric surgery and at education of primary care physicians on bariatric surgery, and have now been produced and are in use in doctors' offices.
June, 2005:
Dr. Smith and his team presented a poster at the meeting of the
American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS)
in Orlando, in June, 2005, on the topic of “Laparoscopic Biliopancreatic Diversion with
Duodenal Switch
in Patients with BMI > 60”. This poster detailed Dr. Smith’s outcomes with Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch patients in this category, which is perceived to be a more difficult category of patients for doing the Laparoscoic Duodenal Switch (because of the difficulty of the procedure in patients with high BMI’s). Dr. Smith aimed to help show that the completely Laparoscopic Biliopnacreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch is a safe and very feasible operation in these higher BMI ranges.
December, 2004:
The
Audio-Digest®
Foundation recently released a Continuing Medical Education Program on Bariatric Surgery featuring Dr. Dennis Smith as one of the invited faculty members. The
American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS)
asked Dr. Smith to present on the topic of “Bariatric Procedures and Patient-Selection Criteria”, which touched on the three major bariatric operations that Dr. Smith does, the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, the Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch, and the Lap-Band, and his experience in patient selection for each operation. The Audio-Digest tapes are one of the premier forms of Continuing Medical Education used by a great number of physicians the world over. This Program was released in December of 2004.
